OH MY MELLOW | NO.3

PYJAMAS WITH A SIDE OF THINGS THAT ARE MAKING OUR HEARTS SING

We’re dreaming of

Swapping our sumptuously soft Moon + Mellow sleepwear – temporarily, of course – for white fluffy robes at GlassonLakehouse’s spanking-new Brooks & Co Spa.

Co Westmeath’s once tired golf hotel reopened to much fanfare last summer, following a reported 9m makeover by Press Up hospitality, and with all the hip, familiar motifs we’ve come to expect (zeitgeist dining/cocktails, Instagrammable interiors, in-room Marshall amps and vinyl). Brooks & Co is appropriately quirky, with reclaimed timber walls and floors a colourful menagerie of flora and fauna artworks and textiles. Treatments range from facials to massages to pedicures, with a very tempting Stay & Spa package from €245pp per night including B&B, a cocktail at Bonnie’s Restaurant, a one-hour Swedish massage and access to outdoor heated pool and hot tubs overlooking the magnificent Lough Ree.

Lighten the mood…

With FieldDay, a Co Down-born lifestyle brand that celebrates its 20th birthday this month.
Its founder Alix Mulholland achieved the near-impossible: bottled the olfactory essence of Ireland into fragranced candles, hand soap, hand wash and diffusers, which have gone down a storm both domestically and internationally. (In fact, Mulholland is probably even working on a Storm scent… her Apothecary collection includes the nostril-pleasing fragrances of Rain, Peat, Hay, Lichen, Ivy and Flora.)

Moon + Mellow being an organic, fair trade brand that uses recycled and recyclable packaging, we love FieldDay’s similarly sustainable approach, with candles’ paper lids infused with wildflower seeds, to be planted in the very same vessel or scattered in the garden.

Couch potatoing for…

Blonde, the long-awaited Netflix original film about Marilyn Monroe.

When asked what she wore to bed, Monroe famously replied, I only wear Chanel No. 5”, but had Moon + Mellow been invented then we’re pretty sure she’d have said the cami set

… But pure speculation aside: this Oscar-buzz movie is sure to top Netflix Ireland’s top ten, as Cuban actress Ana de Armas slips into the bombshell’s heels, each scene inspired by an existing photograph of the star.

Pass us the popcorn.

Current bedtime reading…

Is Maggie “Hamnet” O’Farrell’s The Marriage Portrait, which vividly transports readers to Renaissance Italy, to the rarefied world of the real-life 16th-century Italian noblewoman Lucrezia di Cosimo deMedici, who was forced at the age of 15 to marry the older Duke of Ferrera, as a merging of two dynasties.

A love match it was categorically not, which this operatic novel evokes in all its sensuous, visceral glory; O’Farrell’s rich language is sometimes so intoxicating to be overwhelming. But if you like your fiction florid and immersive, you’ll have no issues with lines such as: The tigress didnt so much pace as pour herself, as if her very essence was molten, simmering, like the ooze from a volcano.”

A great excuse to slip into your pyjamas early. The Marriage Portrait by Irish writer Maggie O'Farrell

On our nightstand…

Literally, is Shady & the Lamp, whose artisanal lampshades are the brainchild of master lighting designer Sarah ODea and a winning combination of chintz and glitz: think grandma’s living room crossed with a bordello.

Her team sources as many materials locally and sustainably as possible, collaborating with Irish businesses and crafts people, including textile designers, metal workers and wood turners, from their studio and showroom in Dublin 8.

And don’t forget to have one last admiration of your Moon + Mellow nightwear before you turn the light off.
