OH MY MELLOW NO. 28

Remember, remember… this month’s pop culture hotlist to warm our cockles.

STREAMING Bad Sisters 2
No sooner have we finished the romp of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals are we racing towards this week’s release of Bad Sisters season two, the first outing of which had us chuckling, cheering and gasping at Sharon’s Horgan’s incisive and blackly funny take of the Garvey sisters, one of which may have bumped off surely one of TV’s best ever villains, Claes Bang’s monstrous JP. It was a whodunit with a feminist wink, and so we’re on the edge of our sofas for this follow up co-starring Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson as the ‘bad’ sisters, plus new cast members – the marvellous Fiona Shaw and Barry Ward.

PLAYLISTING Sister Ghost
Given the shockwaves of Trump’s decisive win across the pond, there have been many good reasons to turn to the dulcet tones of Katy J Pearson who delivered a stunning, CMAT-adjacent performance on Jools Holland last week. On the other hand, many women are in no mood to lay down and surrender, making it timely to tune into Derry’s Shannon Delores O’Neill, aka Sister Ghose whose guitar-led battle cry on She’s Wild (“She’s wild / And I don’t blame her / ‘Cos they try / To contain her”) is just the ticket right now. Check out her newly released debut album Beyond the Water.

READING Cher: The Memoir, Part I
You can’t beat a good music autobiography and we’ve high hopes for Cher’s new release this month, the 78-year-old singer having liveda life too immense for only one book” (so says the publisher). Her life less ordinary began in peripatetic and hectic form before she hit the big time as one half of singing duo Sonny and Cher, in a professional and personal partnership that fast became toxic. A survival story sprinkled with glitter and (hopefully) celebrity name-dropping and industry insights? Yes please.

PODCASTING Dish
Depending on the host (and indeed the guests), dinner parties can become a messy affair after a few jars. But there’s no such risk on Dish, the food and drinks series co-hosted by Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett and radio broadcaster Nick Grimshaw that launched in summer 2022 and, like a fine wine, is only getting better with age. Each episode, Hartnett rustles up a dish for famous guests that have so far included Florence Pugh, Du Lipa, Richard E Grant, and our very own Marian Keyes, Siobhán McSweeney, Saoire Monica-Jackson, Richard Corrigan, Joanne McNally and Aisling Bea. Dig out snacks, refreshments – your favourite Moon + Mellow pyjamas – and enjoy.
