Galgorm hotel’s Thermal Village and Spa. It really does look like a dream, the sort of picture-perfect oasis you’d design for yourself if you were offered three wishes, with its complex of indoor and outdoor hot tubs, plunge pools, saunas, sanariums, steam rooms, laconium, caldarium and aromatic grottos and salt caves. Moreover, a river literally runs through it: the River Maine, flowing through the 380-acre private estate around half an hour from Belfast city and two and a half hours form central Dublin. Claire Keegan’s Foster, which follows her masterpiece that was last year’s Small Things Like These. Foster tells the beguiling tale of a young girl in rural Ireland whose mother is once again pregnant in an already busy, impoverished household. She’s sent off to live with a childless couple on a small farm where she begins to thrive. Will she stay or will she go? Small but perfectly formed, this bittersweet book can easily be devoured within a lazy weekend.
