OH MY MELLOW | No.17

Silly season is upon us but don’t forget to schedule in some self-care with our end-of-year edit.

WATCHING Maestro
Save a date for Maestro on Netflix from December 20. You don’t need to be a scholar on Leonard Bernstein – best known for creating the music for West Side Story, with lyricist Stephen Sondheim – to admire this handsomely-shot portrait of a man whose duality of gregarious conductor vs introspective composer, happily-married heterosexual vs closeted gay man, creates conflict his life and work. Bradley Cooper directs and stars as Bernstein opposite a career-best turn by Carey Mulligan as his wife, the actress Felicia Montealegre.

READING The Christmas Guest
It’s Christmas Day in 2019 and an American woman in New York stumbles on an old diary from when she was an art student in London. “I decided to take a look, not entirely sure that I’m prepared to go back in time to that annus horribilus, that murderous year,” she says, “but also knowing that once I start to read I won’t be able to stop.” It’s a premonition of reading Peter Swansons page-turning thriller that swoops back in time to the 1980s when Ashley was befriended by a wealthy classmate who lived in a country pile. To reveal more would risk giving spoilers, so we won’t. Find out for yourself the twists and turns in this bingeable novella.

TIPPLING Irish Kitchen Cocktails
No bartending experience required for Oisín Davis’s book Irish Kitchen Cocktails, which could come in very handy this festive season. The spirits writer and director of Great Irish Beverages has curated 60 cocktail recipes that can be made with everyday kitchen equipment – and Irish-made gin, poitín, vodka, rum, liqueur, mead, vermouth and fruit distillates. Chapters include epic punch bowls, Irish cream dessert and frozen blender cocktails, and even hangover helpers. Try not to spill any down your Moon + Mellow PJs, though. Hic!

DAY OUT Design Collective
It’s the final countdown to gorgeous gifting at Dublin’s Powerscourt Centre, where Design Collective has cherry-picked some of the crème de la crème of Irish independent brands including yours truly, Moon + Mellow. The pop-up shop runs until December 24 and offers the chance to try before you buy if you happen to be self-gifting, ahem.
