OH MY MELLOW NO.23

As we head into high holiday season, Moon + Mellow has its finger on the pulse for the best books, podcasts, music and haircare to send you on your way.

BOOK All the Rage: Power, Pain, Pleasure
The tyranny of the corset is well documented, until the Roaring Twenties introduced looser forms for women. But the quest for perfection’ didnt end there, as Virginia Nicholson regales in her new book subtitled Stories from the Frontline of Beauty, 1860-1960. The necrosis-causing paraffin nose job in the early 1900s was a precursor to the so-called tweakments of the 21st century, while todays low-paid female textile workers in developing countries echo those employed in the early days of industrialisation. This romp through womens history is fascinating, funny, thought-provoking and grotesque in equal measure, and will have you glad of our free-flowing Moon + Mellow Resort Collection kaftans while reading about Victorian-era corsetry.

PODCAST Glad We Had This Chat
Beauty is also the hot topic of Caroline Hironss lively new chat show, who, after 35 years in the industry, makes for an expert host – and has an enviable little black book of contacts. Shes best known for her Skin Rocks skincare and app, and here peeks into the cosmetic bags and bathroom cabinets of celebrities and beauty mavens, including style icon Sarah Jessica Parker, the delightful Stacey Solomon, and sisters Fleur and Keshia East who just launched the tight-textured haircare range Kurl Kitchen. Great fun, and also on YouTube.

ALBUM Lúireach
It seems everything Lankum touches turns to spun gold, and Landlesss second album seems to be no exception, as LankumCormac MacDiarmad contributes fiddle, viola and banjo, with their producer John Spud’ Murphy returning to the helm. Landless comprises the spellbinding harmonies of Lily Power, Méabh Meir, Ruth Clinton and Sinéad Lynch, weaving between soaring, brooding, ecclesiastical and maudlin folk songs, old and new. Ideal for late sunsets and witching hours under the stars.

SELF CARE Sea+Solu
Summer holidays can cause havoc on hair, from penetrating UV rays to salty and chlorine swims drying out even the healthiest of tresses. Hooray then for Sinéad Asple, who launched her luxury haircare range Sea+Solu earlier this year, and whose product bundles (Repair, Volume, Healthy, for instance) offer best value. Sunkissed hair in particular will benefit from the Moisture Bundle which includes a nourishing Melt Mask and a Hair Booster spray, while an Anti-Frizz version of the former poses a real challenge to humidity.
DRESS CODE Resort Maxi in Jardin Burnt Red
Balmy days and nights deserve wafty attire, and none more so than our fine organic cotton poplin maxi dress that can be worn both loose or belted, depending on mood or occasion. A deep bronze hand-painted printpiping details and extra deep pockets add both style and substance for beach holidays, mimosa brunches, and people-watching in dappled parks and plazas.
