STREAMING The Perfect Couple
Nicole Kidman playing yet another frosty WASP? Don’t mind if we do. Sure, after Nine Perfect Strangers, Big Little Lies, The Undoing and Expats, she’s hardly stretching herself here as a wealthy, impeccably groomed murder mystery novelist – but it’s difficult to resist a glossy Netflix soap opera and, besides, Irish viewers will be cheering on the home-grown talent that is Jack Reynor and Eve Hewson. In this adaption of Elin Hilderbrand’s eponymous novel, a body washes up on the beach the day after a wedding rehearsal, making everyone a suspect.

PODCAST Origins with Cush Jumbo
It’s early days – at the time of writing, only two episodes have dropped – but our interest is already piqued by this new interview series hosted by The Good Wife actress. With so many celebrities hosting podcasts these days, it’s easy to eye-roll at the eligibility of reality TV stars and not-funny comedians donning journalistic hats. But actors are more expert than most at excavating histories and human behaviours and Jumbo does a class job of eking out Anna Wintour’s origin stories, ditto that of Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel.
BINGEING The Outrun
Quick! The film version of Amy Liptrot’s book of the same name is released in Irish and UK cinemas on September 27 and you’ll get the biggest dividends if you read it first. Oddly life-affirming, despite it’s often grim subject matter, it’s a beautifully written autobiographical drama based on Liptrot’s battle with alcoholism when she swapped the family farm on a remote Orkney island for the bright lights (and all-night raves and off-licenses) of London, and her rehab return to mother nature. Saoirse Ronan stars as the author in the film version.
