IN BED WITH TASTEMAKER, EDEL KINANE

There's something about getting to know someone when they're off duty.

For the first in our new In Bed With… series, we're slipping into something more comfortable with Edel Kinane, stylist, founder of Tastemaker and a woman who knows a thing or two about great style.

From her years working in fashion at Marie Claire Australia and Brown Thomas to launching her own Moroccan Prickly Pear Seed Oil, Edel has plenty of stories to tell.

We chat about the wardrobe pieces worth investing in, beauty favourites, her love of interiors and what makes a perfect Saturday. There are some brilliant Irish brands to discover along the way, a little Ibiza spirit and a rather fabulous imaginary guest list for a night on the sofa.

And, of course, we talk pyjamas.

Wearing our Midnight Jellyfish print, Edel lets us in on a few of her favourite things, her everyday rituals and why great style doesn't stop when you get home.

You've spent years working in fashion, from Marie Claire Australia to Brown Thomas and now Tastemaker. After all that time surrounded by beautiful clothes, what are the three wardrobe staples you think every woman should own? The pieces that really earn their keep.

Yes, there are definitely some key pieces that will never owe you anything and are worth the investment. A smart long coat always looks super stylish without worrying too much about what’s underneath. My go-to this season is The Landskein, Irish design and fabrics, beautifully tailored. A pair of indigo jeans in a shape that flatters, like the ‘Shon’ from Nili Lotan or ‘Ayla’ from Citizens of Humanity. Both look cool with just a simple white T-shirt. The last item would be a great leather bag. You can go high-end, but I also love the simple designs from Arket, which use quality leather at a great price point. I also recommend the ‘Panama’ shopper from Irish brand Landa. It’s great for work, weekends or travel.

As a personal stylist, you're helping women discover what works for them. But when it comes to your own wardrobe, when do you feel most like yourself? What's your go-to outfit when you want to look and feel your best?

So this can vary depending on my mood and what I have planned for the day. I would have to say that ‘casual’ me will often reach for my olive cargos from The Frankie Shop. They’re a great silhouette. My ‘fun’ mood will usually involve some sequins or a tulle skirt, dressed down with a great knit. I love the friction of casual and dressy styles together. You can pick up fantastic pre-loved vintage tulles online. My favourite knit at the moment has to be my Colin Burke grey hoody, a lifetime investment but I think worth it.

You've seen plenty of fashion trends come and go over the years. Are there any current trends you just can't get your head around? Anything you wouldn't be caught dead wearing?

You can look at a new trend on the runway and think no way, but then by the time it hits the high street and Instagram, it becomes normalised and you think... maybe? However, I’m still not on board with the Tabi flats from Maison Margiela, but never say never!

You've recently launched your Tastemaker Moroccan Prickly Pear Seed Oil, inspired by your travels to Morocco. Tell us a little about how that came about.

Yes! I just can’t get enough of my Moroccan Prickly Pear Seed Oil. I first discovered this luxury face oil when visiting a souk pharmacy in the Medina in Marrakech. I was immediately hooked as my skin felt so hydrated, soft and literally glowed. When I ran out at home, I couldn’t find an equivalent oil of high quality, so I spent the last year sourcing my own 100% organic, natural oil and launched it under my Tastemaker brand. It contains just one ingredient, Opunitia Ficus Indica oil from the fruit of the Prickly Pear or Barbary Fig Cactus in Morocco. It takes one tonne of fruit to make a litre of oil and is full of antioxidants and vitamin E. Referred to in Morocco as ‘natural botox’, it helps reduce the look of fine lines and prevents wrinkles by repairing the skin barrier. This oil has transformed my skin as I used to suffer from rosacea. I’m very excited to share its benefits with anyone that suffers from dry skin, particularly on the face and neck. It can also be used on hair and nails to nourish and help growth.

Are there any other beauty products you simply couldn't live without?

I like to keep my skin ritual quite simple. I mix my Prickly Pear Seed oil into my moisturiser in the morning, Roche Posay with SPF and Dermalogica in the evening. I also use Dermalogica ultra calming cleanser. It’s a great product. From a make-up point of view, I love Poco’s universal glow, which I mix with either Victoria Beckham’s foundation drops or Trinny’s new Fearless Tint. Both foundations are lovely and light. I also use By Terry’s Tea to Tan, which is a quick and painless way to give my face a bit of colour. Lastly, I’m a slave to my RMS Ruby Moon red lipstick, although I have to order it from the US, so I am tempted to try Victoria Beckham’s new red lipstick in Coquelicot, which has just landed in Brown Thomas.

So, are you a morning person? Up and at 'em, or do you prefer to linger in bed for a while at the weekends?

I’m definitely up and at ‘em as I usually wake up really early and can’t get back to sleep. I love when the house is quiet and I can potter about in my PJs getting jobs done with a mug of hot water and lemon. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. I literally look forward to my coffee from the night before. I will occasionally make eggs and avocado if we’re doing a family breakfast, but usually it’s just a slice of my Mum’s brown bread, made from gluten-free oats, nuts and seeds, topped with her homemade marmalade. I’m addicted to both. She has shared the bread recipe, but I’m still waiting on the secret marmalade!

You've got an entire Saturday to yourself. No work, no commitments and absolutely nowhere you need to be. How would you spend it?

So after the aforementioned ‘potter’ and a quick scan of the papers, I will always try to do a 40-minute ‘Burn’ or ‘Strength’ class at my local RAW gym. There is no better feeling than getting a sweat on first thing within a group. It’s also over before you know it. I will then go for a walk with one of my three kids (16, 18 & 20 years) to grab a coffee and try to get as much chat out of them as possible. Later I might go watch one of them play a hockey or rugby match. If there are no matches, I will meet a friend for lunch in Monkstown either pre- or post-another walk. I might pop into my Mum or sisters later on before heading into town for a browse at new arrivals and finish with a margarita and a bite to eat with my husband in a local restaurant. Fuoco in Ranelagh is a current favourite.

You've clearly got an eye for style. Does that extend to your home? How would you describe your interiors style, and what's your favourite room in the house to relax in?

I’d like to think it does! I have always loved interiors and thought about doing it professionally many years ago. I now live that life precariously via my husband’s business Rowell Design. Fashion styling is also all about colour and fabrics, so it’s all very connected. Our house is what I would describe as ‘cosy contemporary’. We moved in a few years ago having transformed a 1970s town house. My favourite place to sit is by the open fire in our kitchen in winter or in our back garden in summer. It’s a gorgeous sun trap.

Have you read anything particularly good lately? We'd love a recommendation or two for our bedside reading list.

I’m ashamed to say that I have a large stack of half-read books by my bedside as I usually get pulled down an Instagram rabbit hole, particularly if the book doesn’t grab me early. However, I recently completed ‘Start with Yourself’ by Emma Gredde. I was preparing to launch my Moroccan oil and wanted some founder inspiration from this impressive businesswoman. In summary, she advocates: working really hard, getting out and meeting people and always knowing what’s happening with your money.

Every good kitchen deserves a soundtrack. What's the one song guaranteed to get you dancing around the kitchen island, no matter how many times you've heard it?

I love a good dance. My destination holiday with my girlfriends is Ibiza, so any dance music will do it. We should all dance more and go on more girls' trips!

Imagine you've been invited onto Celebrity Gogglebox. Which three celebrities would you choose to join you on the sofa? What would you watch together, and what would be on the menu for snacks and drinks?

I admire so many people for different reasons, but you also want to have the craic. So, I would pick Susan Sarandon for the sass, Greta Lee for the style and Sade for the tunes. I’m not sure I would want to watch anything with those 3 and instead indulge in a bottle of great rosé, Keogh’s crisps and Perello Gordal olives, another weakness of mine.

Let's talk pyjamas. In your opinion, what makes a really great pair? What do you look for when choosing nightwear?

My nightwear has to be made from a great cotton, one that can keep you cool but still covered, particularly when prone to fluctuating body temperatures. They have to look stylish as you never know when you might have to answer the front door unexpectedly. Pockets are a bonus but may also tempt me to wear them outside.

And finally, of all the prints in the Moon + Mellow collection, what drew you to Midnight Jellyfish?

I love this print so much! The midnight navy/grey background colour is particularly flattering, but I also love the pop of red throughout the jellyfish print. When you’re staring at yourself in the mirror doing your skincare routine, you want to feel and look your best, even in your PJs. Colour is so important when it comes to any item in your wardrobe. It should lift your face and your mood. My Moon + Mellow PJs do both.
